Joel J. Smith

April 25, 1945 - August 21, 2017

Joel J. Smith, 72, of Oconee, died Monday, August 21, 2017 in his home.  He was born April 25, 1945 in Taylorville, son of the late Wayne J. & Sadie (Taylor) Smith.

Joel served in the U.S. Air Force in Thailand during the Vietnam War. He lived his entire life in rural Stonington & Oconee and was a member of the Oconee Baptist Church; NRA; & a union member with Circle Steel, where he worked as a welder.  Joel was a farmer & he and his wife, along with special friends Bob & JoAnne Clark, owned & operated The Barn in rural Tower Hill, offering Southern Gospel music for 16 years.  He enjoyed fishing, traveling, had a love for John Deere equipment, and talking about old times with friends & family.

Joel Smith and Judy Grubb were married on September 13, 1980 in Murrayville United Methodist Church.  She survives in Oconee, along with sister-in-law, Norma Smith, Beecher City, IL; nephews: Mark Smith, Decatur, IL & Ricky Smith, Chicago, IL; special cousin, Cleda Wood, Taylorville, IL; special sisters & brothers-in-law: Louise & Harold Walkington; Frank & Sandy Grubb; and Sandy & Carroll Chaudion; nieces & nephews: Mike (Barb) Walkington, Kathy (Rick) Bridges, Tony Walkington, Debbie (Wes) Vaughn, Steve (Amy) Grubb, Kerry (Steve) Cox, Jim (Millie) Grubb, Damon (Tammi) Chaudion, Amy (Brian) Smith, & Jason Chaudion; several great nieces & nephews and great-great nieces & nephews.  He was also preceded by brothers, Nile & Gale.

Funeral Information

Visitation will be held Saturday, August 26, 2017 from 5 to 8 p.m. in McCracken-Dean Funeral Home.

Graveside inurnment services will be held on Wednesday, August 30, 2017 at 10:00 am. in the Old Stonington Cemetery with Pastor Ken Barlow officiating and military rites by Pana Veterans Honor Guard.
