Jean Amling, 86, of Pana, formerly of Oconee, died Tuesday, April 13, 2010 in Heritage Manor--Pana. Jean was born in Pana on November 12, 1923, the second child of Herman and Emma Reitz Alde.
After graduation from Millikin University, Jean spent a year of internship in dietetics at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. She then worked at Veterans Administration Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee as a clinical dietician before marrying Martin Amling in 1947. Except for a brief time in Columbus, OH while Martin finished his schooling, they spent their entire married life in Pana and rural Oconee.
Jean was involved in many activities. As a teenager, she was the first female lifeguard at the Pana Community Swimming Pool in Kitchell Park. She was also elected Homecoming Queen while attending Millikin University. Jean was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Pana, serving in various capacities such as Sunday School teacher, Ladies Guild officer and organist. For many years she was an active member of the Tuesday Club, a local women’s literary group. She supported her children’s school activities by being an active PTA member and by attending many scholastic, choral, band and sporting events. She was a devout Christian, a fun-loving and nurturing wife, mother, aunt and friend and she will be missed.
She is survived by her husband Martin, of Pana, and by her children: Christine (Lynn) Bishop of Rosamond; Robert (Debbie) Amling of Tower Hill; Jennifer Young of St. Marks, FL; and Carol (Dwight) Vasel of Ft. Worth, TX. Her grandchildren are Marta (Paul) Stoll of Spring, TX; Amy (Jason) Simac of Pana; Richard (Kelly) Vasel, of Phoenix, AZ; John (Emily) Vasel, Sally (Alex “AJ”) Cruz and Emma Vasel of Ft. Worth, TX and Stacie Amling of Tower Hill. Surviving great grandchildren are Robbie and Jacob Stoll, Anna and Joshua Simac, Kaley and Jaelynn Vasel and Stella Cruz. Jean is also survived by her sisters-in-law, Alice Alde and Barbara Amling; brothers-in-law: Arol (Rachel) Amling and Jim (Carol) Amling; and numerous nieces & nephews who were very special to her. She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers: Robert & Reynold; & great grandson, Tyler Simac.
Funeral services will be Sunday, April 18, 2010 in St. Paul Lutheran Church, Pana at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Terry O’Brien officiating. Burial will be in Rosemond Grove Cemetery, Rosamond. Friends may call on Saturday from 4 to 7 p.m. in McCracken-Dean Funeral Home.
