Carl Sphar, 92, of Tower Hill, died Sunday, March 20, 2011 at his previous family home in Decatur with his family by his side. He was born April 22, 1918 in Tower Hill, the son of Grover & Hazel Gladman Sphar. Carl grew up in Tower Hill, and lived in the Decatur area for most of his life. He returned to Tower Hill in about 1983 after his retirement to raise Arabian horses. Carl worked for several years at General Electric Co. He was also a retired auctioneer and was retired from the Illinois Department of Transportation. Carl was a member of the Tower Hill Lions Club, where he had served as President; Shelbyville Moose; and New Hope Baptist Church, and was a past member of the Illinois Auctioneers Association.
He was very proud of all of his children and his many grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren.
Carl married Mary McBride on May 11, 1942 in St. Louis, MO. She is deceased.
He married Evelyn Foster on September 9, 1984 in Tower Hill. She is deceased.
Carl is survived by his children: Janet Wise& husband Lyle, Shelbyville, IL; Sue McMahon & husband Dave, Mt. Zion, IL; Gene Sphar & wife Glenda, Mt. Zion, IL; Pam Corman & husband Tom, Long Creek, IL; Darlene Devore & husband Roy, Sullivan, IL; Terry Sphar & wife Mary, Warrington, PA; Carol Moore & husband Dana, Pinellas, Park, FL; and Mary Beth Berry & husband Russ, Dalton City, IL; step children: Roger Foster & wife Evelyn, Tower Hill, IL; Dee Murphy & husband Don E., Tower Hill, IL; and Donna Carroll & husband Rodell, Oconee, IL; 23 grandchildren; 35 great grandchildren; 6 great-great grandchildren; several step grandchildren, step great grandchildren, and step great-great grandchildren; and sisters: Evelyn Scheel, Decatur, IL & Wilma Grotjan, Flagler Beach, FL. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son & his wife, Kenny & Pat Dugger; son-in-law, Roger Fox; 2 grandsons, Danny Brown & Greg Drum; and 2 brothers, Leland Sphar & Lowell Sphar.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 26, 2011 in McCracken-Dean Funeral Home at 10:00 a.m. with Rev. Don Pease officiating. A graveside service will be held on Saturday at 12:00 p.m. in Mt. Zion Township Cemetery. Friends may call on Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. in the funeral home.
