Sarah M. Glick
March 10, 1917 - December 16, 2009
Sarah M. Glick, 92, of rural Tower Hill, IL, died at her home on Wednesday, December 16, 2009. She was born March 10, 1917, in Lima Township, Rock County, WI, the daughter of Ansel & Mary (Mawhinney) Godfrey. She married Victor H. Glick on August 1, 1936 in Taylorville, IL. He preceded her in death on June 13, 1993.
Sarah was a lifelong “farmerette”, beginning as a teenager on the family dairy farm in Wisconsin. She earned her Red Letter U as the Intra-Mural Manager of Milton Union High School’s Girls’ Sports team, and her Gold Pin as a member of the National Honor Society.
Starting her own family in Cold Spring Township, IL, she continued her love of the outdoors with farming and gardening throughout her lifetime. Results of her self-taught expertise in growing produce were always eagerly anticipated by many awaiting her yearly productions of asparagus, sweet corn & tomatoes.
During World War II she taught in the Black Oak School in Cold Spring Township. She was a pianist, and class teacher at the former Zion Methodist Church. More recently, Sarah taught Bible history and genealogy of the twelve Tribes of Jacob Israel, for those who had “eyes to see and ears to hear!”
The community also had access to her through her volunteer work; playing accordion and piano for the older generations at local rehabilitation and health care centers on Sunday afternoons. She played accordion with Kinsey’s Pana Sonnettes Fun Band at local Senior Centers, etc. She was a member of the Tower Hill Women’s Club and the Tower Hill Senior Citizens Group.
Maintaining extensive scrapbooks with clippings of local events and news involving her genealogy studies was a key mission for Sarah. Her genealogy records of the Glick and Godfrey families, who emigrated from the British Isles and Germany to the United States, are comprehensive. This includes the historical booklet “Descendants of Johannes & Magdalena Glick 1749-1982”, as well as Family Tree documentation.
As a Correspondent she wrote a column of local Zion News for newspapers in Shelbyville (The Democrat & The Daily Union), and in Pana, (The News Palladium) for many years.
Surviving are her daughters: Janis (Robert) Wood of Tower Hill; Charlotte (Sherman) Wallace of Orlando, FL; & Ellen (Harold) Bender of Ellington, CT; son: David Glick of Tower Hill; her grandchildren: Katrina (Kent) Griffith, Brian (Ramona) Wood, Valerie (Randall) Willmore, Daniel (Donna) Wallace, Denise (Ronald ‘Scott’) Bagley, Deanna (Scott) Jones; her great-grandchildren: Megan, Rachel, & Hannah Griffith; Quincy (Whitney) Wood; Kassandra & Logan Willmore; David Wallace; Jake, Vance & Christian Bagley; Tallulah, & Augusta Jones; her great-great grandchild: Ephram Wood; & her brother, Frank (Lois) Godfrey, Janesville, WI. Her parents, husband, 3 brothers, 2 sisters & 2 great-grandsons, Blake Wood & Daniel Edmondson, preceded her in death.
