Linda A. Scott
August 26, 1948 - May 06, 2017
Linda A. Scott, beloved daughter, treasured niece, devoted cousin, and faithful servant, passed away May 6, 2017 at Carle Foundation Hospital. She was 68 years young.
Born August 26, 1948 in Pana, Illinois, Linda was the only child of Germaine (Delassus) Scott and Edgar Scott. Linda was a devoted caretaker to her mother for many years prior to her mother's passing.
Linda grew up in a close-knit family and spent many summers as a child playing outside with her cousins, Daniel and Jerry Lecocq, when they would visit from Washington, Illinois. As the cousins aged and moved away, they would always gather together for Christmas with their extended families to celebrate together. Linda would often sit around the table and tell stories of the family's history and emigration to the United States from France, as well as the family's early start in the U.S.
Linda spent many years as an active member of Altrusa International of Champaign-Urbana. Photos show Linda smiling as she served food, handed out books, created fundraising crafts, or supported the many causes for which Altrusa gave its time and attention.
Books were a passion for Linda, and something she shared with those close to her and those she never met. Linda contributed an untold number of books to "Read Across America," a valuable program for preschool children and their parents. "Read Across America" is known for its annual celebration of the birthday of Dr. Seuss. Always humble, Linda never accepted recognition for her yearly donations, but instead simply gave credit to Altrusa. More importantly, Linda passed on her love of books to her young cousins, Marc Lecocq, Benjamin Lecocq and Alexandra Rhude. Every year for birthdays and Christmas, Linda would send a box laden with books, introducing her youngest family to new authors and genres. Many of these gifts have been read cover-to-cover repeatedly.
Linda will be missed by many friends, including her friends in Altrusa and her bridge club. She often enjoyed Sunday brunches with her friends and would send flowers of encouragement or give of her time and attention when one of them was in need.
A lover of dogs, Linda was a big supporter of the Humane Society of Champaign Urbana. She also was the loving owner of a Yorkie, Angie. Angie was just one of the many Yorkies Linda loved and cared for during her life.
Linda spent her adult life in Champaign, a city she has called home since her graduation from the University of Illinois. Linda worked for many years in the private sector both at HAL Communication Corp. and Segno Communications, before taking a job with the University of Illinois, from where she retired in 2005.
Linda was preceded in death by her parents, Germaine (Delassus) Scott and Edgar Scott, her Aunt Louise (Delassus) Lecocq, her Uncle Paul Lecocq, and her cousin Jerry Lecocq. Surviving relatives include her first cousin Daniel (Judith) Lecocq of Murphysboro, second cousins Jennifer (Ken) Rhude, and daughter Alexandra, of Carbondale and Paul (Donna) Lecocq, and sons Marc and Benjamin, of Georgetown, Texas. Linda is also survived by her Yorkie, Angie, who will be making a new home in Murphysboro.
Linda did not wish for a funeral. The family is planning a private internment at a later date. Linda will be laid to rest in Mound Cemetery, Pana.
Donations can be made in Linda's honor to "Read Across America" c/o Urbana Park District, 505 W. Stoughton, Urbana, Illinois 61801.
